Assessment of the Economic Impact of Cruise Tourism in Fiji
In partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), we launched a study that measures the economic impact of cruising in Fiji.
The study quantifies the impact of current cruise visits to the Fijian Economy by assessing the potential direct and indirect impact of the cruise sector, its growth and investments required to support further growth in Fiji.
The research includes a cost-benefit analysis of the expansion of the cruise sector in Fiji to inform investment decisions by Government, donor partners and the industry. Environmental and social impacts of the development opportunities have also been considered as part of the analysis.
The study is a key deliverable of the Ministry under the Fijian Tourism 2021.
COVID-19 Business Survey: Tourism Focus
We partnered with the International Finance Corporation to conduct a survey of business owners and managers to better understand how the pandemic has impacted their business, how businesses were adapting to the crisis, identify resources businesses have accessed to adapt and to determine what additional resources and support businesses will need in the short term and during the recovery period.
Domestic Tourism in Fiji
In partnership with the Market Development Facility, Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association and Tourism Fiji, we embarked on Fiji’s first Domestic Tourism Demand Survey.
This Local Tourism Demand Study is designed to provide a better understanding of the local tourism market, its characteristics and opportunities to more effectively target and cater to the local market demand.
The study encompassed results from a survey of more than 10,000 local travelers and additional focus groups, including face to face interviews. The study gives a snapshot of the local market traveler, regional profiles, emerging regions, and key insights on existing marketing efforts, accommodation packages and deals, food and beverage options, activities and customer service.
The findings of the study will assist the industry to better understand different local tourism segments, as well as the spending patterns and preferences at different tourism destinations in Fiji.
From the Farm to the Tourist’s Table
The ‘From the Farm to Tourist’s Table’ studies the sourcing of imported and local fresh produce by Fiji’s hotel sector. It analyzes the purchasing patterns of Fiji’s hotels, to better understand existing linkages between the tourism and agriculture sectors, and to identify opportunities to improve these linkages.
This report covers Fiji’s main tourism areas of Nadi, Lautoka, the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, Denarau and the Coral Coast that are home to 74 percent of all bed places.
Tourism Human Resources Needs Assessment
In an effort to revitalize the Fijian tourism workforce, the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, in collaboration with United Nations World Tourism Organization and with the technical support of Victoria University, conducted a rapid Human Resource Needs Assessment.
The Assessment identifies baseline information on opportunities and barriers — from both demand and supply side. It provides recommendations that examine options and scenarios for human resources development within the framework of COVID-19 tourism recovery.
It further helps understand how challenges can be addressed to ensure readiness in the new normal, with the right skill set to cater for changing demands, new markets and to strengthen competitiveness. The Assessment, in addition to being part of Fiji’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, is a key deliverable of the Fijian Tourism 2021.
