Fijian Tourism 2021

The Fijian Tourism 2021 (FT 2021) is a comprehensive development plan prepared by the Fijian Government to grow Fiji’s tourism industry from $1.9 billion in 2017 to an industry worth $2.2 billion by the end of 2021.

The overarching focus of the plan is to maximize tourism yield while achieving a sustainable rate of visitor arrivals growth.

Strategies outlined in the FT 2021 are aligned to the overall vision of the Fijian Government, which is to provide the enabling environment to elevate the tourism sector to provide livelihood, income and to benefit all Fijians.

NATIONAL SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FRAMEWORK

We are currently leading the formulation of Fiji’s National Sustainable Tourism Framework, as a successor plan of the Fijian Tourism 2021 strategy.

The 10-year Framework aims to provide a roadmap to revitalize and enhance the Fijian Tourism industry’s competitive positioning and to anticipate the future needs.

The formulation of the Framework is led by a public-private Steering Committee that includes the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, tourism associations and development partners.

Assessment of the Economic Impact of Cruise Tourism in Fiji

In partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), we launched a study that measures the economic impact of cruising in Fiji.

COVID-19 Business Survey: Tourism Focus Cruise Tourism in Fiji

We collaborated with the International Finance Corporation to survey business owners and managers, aiming to comprehend the pandemic’s effects, assess adaptations, and identify required resources for both short-term and recovery periods.

Domestic Tourism in Fiji

In partnership with the Market Development Facility, Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association and Tourism Fiji, we embarked on Fiji’s first Domestic Tourism Demand Survey.

From the Farm to the Tourist’s Table

This study examines Fiji’s hotel purchasing trends. It aims to understand connections between tourism and agriculture. The goal is to find ways to enhance these connections.

The International Visitor Survey (IVS) provides a quantitative and qualitative assessment of Fiji’s visitor arrivals. The research commenced in 1986 and continues to date with the Ministry taking the primary role of data collection.

Community Engagement

CHEF TRAINING

The Culinary Training Workshop or Chefs training is an ongoing initiative of the Ministry with the Ministry of Agriculture. Since its inception in 2016, the initiative aims to train local chefs on the value of locally grown products and to use them in restaurant menus. At the same time, the participating properties are encouraged to link-up and strengthen partnership with local farmers/suppliers who are encouraged to produce and supply local agricultural products, indigenous fruits and vegetables.

A total of four trainings have been held with 80 Chefs to date under this initiative covering four regions (Yasawa, Coral Coast, Rakiraki and Savusavu).  The 2020 Chefs training was held from 2 – 6 March in Savusavu, with a total of 24 participants from properties ranging from seven-star resorts like Laucala Island Resort to medium and small operators like Daku Resort and Copra Shed Marina

The 2018 Chefs Training was held from 6 – 10 August at the Fiji Beachhouse by renowned Chef, Colin Chung and Pacific Island Resort Consultant partner, Greg Cornwell. A total of 13 participants from 10 properties participated in the 5-day training.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME

National Workshop on Facilitating Movement of Fijian Handicrafts – The workshop was conducted from 28 to 29 September 2017, by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in collaboration with the Ministry, Department of National Heritage and Arts, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Pacific Horticultural and Market Access Program (PHAMA) and Biosecurity of Fiji. Over 30 producers, buyers, Government officials, biosecurity officials and stakeholders involved in the Fijian handicraft industry were present to discuss the new Regional Biosecurity Manual developed by SPC and Australian-funded PHAMA for handicraft exports. The Ministry also used the workshop to present tourism opportunities and the Fijian Made-Buy Fijian Campaign.

Tourism Community Awareness Workshop ( Dawasamu, Tailevu) – The Ministry was invited by the Department of Environment to a Joint Community Awareness Workshop at Nataleira Village for the Tikina of Dawasamu from 28 to 29 August 2017. The theme of the Workshop was “Connecting People to Nature and Sustainable Tourism Supporting Local Community”. The purpose of the Joint Community Awareness Workshop was to provide the people of Dawasamu insights on conservation of the natural environment and its utilization in a sustainable manner, as a source of income.
