Fiji Airports Breaks Ground on Nadi International Airport Solar Farm

Nadi, Fiji | Friday, 03 July 2026 – The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame R. Gavoka, today officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Nadi International Airport Solar Farm at Fiji Airports Estate, Bonunaqwele.

The 3.25-megawatt solar farm marks a major milestone for Fiji Airports, Fiji’s aviation sector, and the country’s broader transition towards sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Gavoka said the project was more than the start of a renewable energy development.

“This is far more than the commencement of a renewable energy project. It is an investment in resilience. It is an investment in energy security. And it is an investment in the long-term sustainability of one of Fiji’s most important national assets,” the Minister said.

The solar farm will support operations at Nadi International Airport, Fiji’s principal gateway to the world and a key pillar of the country’s tourism, trade, investment and regional connectivity.

Hon. Gavoka said the project reflects Fiji Airports’ commitment to reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, lowering operating costs, strengthening energy resilience, and reducing the airport’s carbon footprint.

He added that the project aligns with Fiji’s national development aspirations under Vision 2050 and supports the country’s commitment to a more sustainable, resilient and globally competitive future.

“As our aviation sector continues to grow, so too does the responsibility to ensure that the infrastructure supporting it remains reliable, efficient and future-ready,” he said.

The Minister also acknowledged Fiji Airports’ growing record of environmental leadership, noting recent international recognition for Nadi International Airport, including its Green Airports Recognition award and its recognition as Best Airport – South Pacific Islands at the PATWA International Travel Awards 2026 in Berlin.
Hon. Gavoka said these achievements show that Fiji Airports is investing not only in modern airport infrastructure, but also in climate action, sustainability and environmental stewardship.

He further highlighted the importance of aviation safety in the development of the solar farm, given its location near the airport runway. The project has included technical assessments, including glare studies, to ensure that the installation operates safely alongside airport operations.

“This reflects the professionalism, diligence and high standards that are essential in the aviation sector,” Hon. Gavoka said.

The Minister commended the Board, Management and staff of Fiji Airports for their leadership and vision in advancing the initiative. He also acknowledged CBS Power Solutions, Design Engineering, ITP Renewables, Energy Fiji Limited and all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to this stage.

“Today’s groundbreaking reflects what can be achieved when government, industry, technical experts and development partners work together towards a shared objective,” he said.

Hon. Gavoka said the decisions made today would shape the Fiji inherited by future generations.
“By harnessing the power of the sun, we are strengthening critical infrastructure, reducing emissions, and building a more sustainable future for Fiji,” he said.

The Nadi International Airport Solar Farm is expected to become a symbol of progress, innovation and responsible development, strengthening one of Fiji’s most important gateways while supporting the nation’s renewable energy ambitions.
