Wednesday 2 October, 2024. Today, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, shared exciting updates in Parliament on the recent World Surf League (WSL) Fiji Pro.
After a seven-year break, the WSL Fiji Pro made a successful return, thanks to a three-year partnership between the Coalition Government and the private sector. Hosted at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, from August 19-23, the event showcased Fiji’s natural beauty and reaffirmed its position as a premier destination for sports tourism.
The competition drew 36 athletes from 12 countries, giving a major boost to local businesses, with millions in direct and indirect economic benefits. The global spotlight shone brightly on Fiji, generating $2.5 million in media value for Tourism Fiji, and was supported by global brands like Corona, Red Bull, and Apple Watch.
In addition to boosting tourism, the WSL invested in rebuilding the Cloudbreak Surf Tower and supporting local villages and the Fiji Surfing Association. The event upheld strong environmental standards through coral planting and the One Ocean project.
The success of the Fiji Pro signals a bright future for international events, aligning with the government’s strategy to diversify and strengthen Fiji’s tourism industry.
