November 7, 2024 Nadi, Fiji Stakeholders gathered today at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort for the latest Farm to Fork Initiative workshop, a significant yet poignant session following the recent passing of one of its most influential contributors, Chef Lance Seeto. The workshop, though brief, was deeply impactful, resonating with participants on the future of sustainable practices in Fijian agriculture and tourism.
Chef Seeto, who passed away last week and was cremated on November 6, left an indelible mark on the initiative. Known for his passion for locally sourced ingredients and sustainable culinary practices, Chef Seeto championed the support of local farmers and consistently highlighted Fiji’s rich flavors. His vision and advocacy served as guiding principles for the program’s goals, emphasizing the use of indigenous resources to enhance the tourism sector while supporting economic resilience across Fijian communities.
UNFAO representative Joanne Young, a key speaker at today’s workshop, shared a heartfelt tribute, noting Chef Seeto’s contributions to the Farm to Fork Initiative and his lasting impact on the community. “Lance will be sorely missed,” she remarked, a sentiment echoed by participants who recognized his leadership in promoting sustainable resource use and responsible practices across sectors.
Today’s session, which built on insights gathered from previous workshops in Sigatoka and Savusavu, offered a collective vision for the final phase of the program scheduled for late November in Suva. Participants discussed anticipated outcomes, emphasizing the significance of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the Government of Canada, which has been a valued co-sponsor of the initiative.
These partnerships underscore a shared commitment to fostering sustainability through a multi-sectoral approach, with each organization bringing unique expertise and resources.
A video tribute in honor of Chef Lance Seeto was screened, followed by a moment of silence, allowing attendees to reflect on his legacy. The moving homage set a thoughtful tone for the session, underscoring the importance of Chef Seeto’s vision and the initiative’s commitment to a sustainable future for Fiji.
