Fiji’s Tourism Boom: Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Hon. Vilame Gavoka Urges Investors to Act Now

Denarau, Fiji – June 26, 2025 – Tourism is driving Fiji’s economic momentum, and according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka, the country is ready for more.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2025 AHICE Fiji Investment in Tourism Summit at Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, Hon. Gavoka described tourism as the country’s heartbeat, essential not just for revenue, but for livelihoods, identity, and connection.

“Tourism isn’t just a sector,” he said. “It’s the spirit that connects our people, sustains our livelihoods, and invites the world into the soul of Fiji.”

Surge in Development

Since the first summit in 2023, Fiji has seen a major rise in investment. Sixteen tourism projects are now under construction, adding over 2,200 rooms across the country. Notable developments include the new Crowne Plaza Resort and a revitalised Westin Fiji, both boosting capacity and meetings infrastructure on Denarau.

Even smaller legacy properties like Beachcomber Island are getting upgrades – shifting from outdated models to refreshed four-star experiences. Hon. Gavoka used these examples to encourage more property owners to modernize and meet rising global expectations.

Tourism as a National Platform

Beyond numbers, Hon. Gavoka stressed tourism’s role in strengthening communities and preserving culture. Under the Coalition Government, the goal is to make tourism more inclusive and sustainable.

“From resort staff to village artisans, tourism is how we share the best of Fiji,” he said. “And that spirit – ‘Veivukei’ – mutual support, is what shapes our future.”

By the Numbers

  • Tourism contributes nearly 40% of GDP
  • Visitor arrivals and spending are at record levels
  • Over 2,200 new rooms are being built
  • Iconic resorts are being upgraded through strategic investment

Policy Support for Growth

The Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, also outlined policy moves to support long-term growth. A new Tourism Legislation is in development to ensure quality standards and accountability. The National Sustainable Tourism Framework will guide efforts to make Fiji a leader in responsible travel.

Final Message

Hon. Gavoka ended with a direct appeal to the industry:

“Collaborate boldly. Invest with purpose. Act with urgency. Fiji is ready, and the world is watching.”

With clear government support, strong investor interest, and the unmatched hospitality of its people, Fiji’s tourism future is bright and wide open for those ready to move.
