The 2024 Corona Fiji Pro, presented by Bonsoy, officially opened with a warm welcome to the global surfing community. The event, held at the iconic Cloudbreak, marks a significant return of the World Surf League’s (WSL) prestigious competition to Fiji, reflecting the nation’s deep connection to the ocean and its vibrant surfing culture.
The President of Fiji was present at the opening ceremony, where he emphasized the importance of acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land and iqoliqoli, who are the custodians of the natural resources that make such events possible. He expressed gratitude to the World Surf League and its partners for their continued confidence in Fiji as a premier destination on the global surf tour.
With participants from 12 different countries, the event highlights Fiji’s growing role in the international surfing scene. The President noted that the sport of surfing embodies the passion and respect for nature, values deeply rooted in the Pacific way of life. He also acknowledged the efforts made by the WSL in giving back to the local communities, including the construction of the Tavarua Surf Tower and contributions to nearby villages and the Fiji Surfing Association.
As the competition unfolds, Fiji expects to showcase not just the world-class waves but also the rich culture and hospitality that the island nation is renowned for.
